Ten-Day Ecuador Bird Photography Tour
Photograph Andean and Chocó birds over ten days at Antisana, Guango, Papallacta, Mashpi, Sachatamia and Paz de las Aves.
About this tour
This ten-day photography route concentrates on the high Andes and northwest Ecuador. It begins around Antisana and Papallacta, where open páramo, mountain forest and hummingbird gardens offer different subjects. A full day at Guango Lodge adds feeder and forest photography before the journey turns west.
Four nights in the Chocó region allow time around Mashpi Road, Sachatamia and other reserves with hummingbirds, tanagers, barbets and mixed feeding flocks. The final field morning is at Paz de las Aves, known for Andean Cock-of-the-rock and habituated antpittas, before the return to Quito. Potential subjects include Andean Condor, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Bronzy Inca, Red-headed Barbet and Barred Fruiteater. Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Quito
Arrive in Quito and transfer to the hotel.
Day 2
Antisana and Papallacta
Begin in open Andean habitats around Antisana before continuing toward Papallacta.
Day 3
Guango Lodge
Spend a full day with hummingbird gardens, feeders and forest-edge photography.
Day 4
Papallacta and Puembo
Work in high-Andean habitat around Papallacta, weather permitting, then continue toward Puembo.
Day 5
Northwest Ecuador and Mashpi
Use four nights in the Chocó region for reserves, feeder stations and forest photography around Mashpi and Sachatamia.
Day 9
Paz de las Aves
Make an early visit for Cock-of-the-rock and antpitta photography, then return to Quito.
Day 10
Departure
Transfer to Quito airport.
