A small-group 10-day Guyana route from coastal Georgetown to Iwokrama, Surama and the Rupununi Savanna, estimated at 275-325 species.
About this tour
This small-group 10-day journey combines Guyana's Atlantic coast, Guianan Shield forest and Rupununi Savanna. Initial field sessions visit Hope Beach, the Mahaica River, Georgetown's Garden of Eden and the Botanical Gardens. A flight to Lethem then opens the interior section, followed by an overland transfer into Iwokrama Forest Reserve.
Fieldwork at Iwokrama includes Turtle Mountain, Mori Scrub, the main reserve road and the canopy walkway at Atta Rainforest. A morning visit to a Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock site precedes Surama and a boat outing on the Burro-Burro River. The route then crosses the Rupununi to Karanambu for savanna, forest patches and an evening search for nightjars. The estimated total is 275-325 species.

Reach Georgetown, with time to prepare for the upcoming field itinerary. Accommodation for the night is at Cara Lodge.
The next activity is hope Beach and the Mahaica River, followed by Georgetown's Garden of Eden. Stay overnight at Cara Lodge.
Begin at Georgetown Botanical Gardens, then fly to Lethem and continue overland toward Iwokrama, birdwatching along the way. Continue the birdwatching program at Iwokrama Field Station as time permits. The overnight base is Iwokrama Field Station.
In the morning, make a field stop at Turtle Mountain Trail. The afternoon brings time to make a field stop at main road through reserve. Tonight's stay is at Iwokrama Field Station.
Dedicate the morning to spend the session at Mori Scrub. Reserve the afternoon to spend the session at canopy walkway in Atta Rainforest. The planned overnight is at Atta Rainforest Lodge.
The initial field period is used to explore check a Cock-of-the-Rock nesting site and, if active, a Harpy Eagle nest (if active). Use the post-lunch period to explore Surama area. Overnight at Surama Lodge.
Open the day with time to take a boat trip along the Burro-Burro River, then fieldwork on the access road. The second half of the day is used to make a field stop at Rupununi Savanna along the way to Karanambu. The day finishes with accommodation at Karanambu Lodge.
Continue fieldwork for the entire day at Karanambu savanna and forest patches. Plan the evening session to search for nightjars. The overnight base is Karanambu Lodge.
The initial field period is used to explore Karanambu. Use the post-lunch period to take the return flight to Georgetown. Stay overnight at Cara Lodge.
Continue home on the scheduled international flight.
