Small-Group Ulva Island Land and Sea Birding Tour
A 3.5-hour Ulva Island experience combining a one-hour seabird cruise with a 2.5-hour guided forest walk through the bird sanctuary.
About this tour
Explore Ulva Island from two complementary perspectives on a 3.5-hour small-group birding experience. The first hour is spent on a water taxi around the island, scanning Paterson Inlet for seabirds and marine life. The group then lands at the predator-free bird sanctuary for a 2.5-hour guided walk through native podocarp forest.
Meet the guide at Golden Bay Wharf before boarding the boat. The route on the water is weather dependent, and departure time may change with water-taxi availability. Possible seabirds include mollymawks, Spotted or Pied Shags, Little Penguins, White-fronted Terns, oystercatchers and Red-billed Gulls. Bottlenose Dolphins and New Zealand Sea Lions are sometimes encountered, but all wildlife sightings depend on current conditions.
On Ulva Island, the pace slows as the guide follows maintained tracks and helps the group find birds by call and movement. Rifleman, South Island Saddleback, Stewart Island Robin, Weka, New Zealand Kaka, Yellowhead, Tui and parakeets are among the native birds that may be encountered. The guide also interprets the forest and other island ecology rather than treating the walk as a checklist race.
The public program operates from August through May, except Christmas Day, and standard departures are usually around 8:00 am. The listed price includes the scenic water-taxi circuit, return crossing, local guiding and Department of Conservation concession fees. Groups normally contain two to eight guests, with private arrangements possible. Travelers should be prepared for changing marine weather and for walking on forest tracks after leaving the boat.
