Lachay National Reserve Birdwatching Day
Explore the fog-fed hills and desert margins of Lachay on a birdwatching day from Lima, looking for coastal endemics, tinamous and raptors with a specialist guide.
About this tour
North of Lima, the Lachay landscape shifts from bare ground to green slopes and small wooded gullies. Moisture carried inland by ocean fog sustains this lomas habitat. Ecologística Perú leads a full-day birding visit that follows those changes in vegetation, giving coastal specialists and birds of the wetter valleys separate parts of the day.
The early drive covers roughly 100 km, with agricultural stops to search for Peruvian Thick-knee before entering the reserve. Coastal Miner and Least Seedsnipe use the dry entrance country. Farther in, short grass and open slopes can hold Burrowing Owl and Peruvian Meadowlark; Tawny-throated Dotterel is a seasonal possibility. Watch overhead for Variable Hawk and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle as well as birds on the ground.
A trail through the greener valley reaches a permanent waterhole. Trees, creek vegetation and drinking birds make this a different birding setting from the reserve entrance. The guide searches for Andean Tinamou, Mountain Parakeet, Peruvian Sheartail and Oasis Hummingbird, alongside Band-tailed Sierra Finch, Collared Warbling Finch and Raimondi’s Yellow Finch. The route then reaches the drier Quebrada Guayabito, where Cactus Canastero, Short-tailed Field Tyrant and Greyish Miner are among the possibilities.
Reserve entry, guiding, a box lunch, drinking water and transport from a Lima hotel or the airport are included. Rates are per person and vary with party size; the lowest displayed rate applies to parties of six to eight. An optional stop at Ventanilla Marshes adds a wetland setting and costs USD 20 per person beyond the main tour. Fog and drizzle are common during the cooler coastal season, so carry layers and a windproof jacket. Sightings vary with season and conditions.
