About this tour
Less than an hour south of Porto, Aveiro Lagoon forms a shallow coastal system with extensive intertidal areas. It has been protected as a Special Protection Area since 1988 and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The day covers a cross-section of sand beaches, dunes, mudflats, salt marsh, brackish channels, riparian vegetation and salt pans, with freshwater marsh and small agricultural plots beyond.
Wildfowl, waders and gulls can gather in large numbers. Greater Flamingo, Glossy Ibis and Eurasian Spoonbill feed in the shallows, while Purple Heron, Savi’s Warbler, Common Reed Bunting, Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover and Little Tern are among the breeding birds associated with the wider system. Offshore birding may add Common Scoter in winter and Balearic or Cory’s Shearwater in the appropriate season.
Spring and autumn usually bring the greatest variety, but every season offers a different mix of wetland and coastal birds. This is a full-day guided tour, allowing the route to sample several habitat types rather than remaining at a single viewpoint. Stops are chosen for tide, weather and current bird concentrations.
