Hudsonian Godwit

Numenius hudsonicus

The Hudsonian Godwit is a large shorebird with a long, slightly upturned bill, and long legs. During the breeding season, it displays a rich chestnut coloration on its underparts and exhibits a distinctive black and white barred pattern on its upperparts. In non-breeding plumage, it becomes predominantly grayish-brown. This species is known for its remarkable long-distance migrations, traveling from its Arctic breeding grounds to its wintering areas in southern South America. It frequents coastal mudflats, marshes, and wet grasslands during migration, where it forages for invertebrates by probing the mud with its long bill.
