Humboldt Penguin

Spheniscus humboldti Meyen, 1834

Humboldt Penguin, Spheniscus humboldti, breeds on the Pacific coast of South America from northern Peru to central Chile. It is a penguin of islands and rocky shores, where it nests in burrows dug in guano, and it also uses scrapes or caves. Named for Alexander von Humboldt, it is found only along this coastal stretch in South America. The species was described by Meyen in 1834. Its range overlaps with the Magellanic Penguin on the central Chilean coast, and it is also recorded as a migrant.
