19-Day Ethiopia Endemics and Rift Valley Birding Circuit
A 19-day Ethiopia birding expedition linking the central highlands, Awash, Rift Valley lakes, Bale Mountains and the southern endemic-bird circuit before a final Jemma Valley and Ankober extension.
About this tour
This broad Ethiopia circuit is designed for birders who want substantially more than a short highland sampler. It starts with accessible sites around Addis Ababa and the Jemma Gorge, then crosses the Rift Valley to Awash before turning south through a chain of lakes and the Bale Mountains.
The middle section moves from the Sanetti Plateau and forested highlands toward Wondo Genet, Hawassa and the dry southern country around Yabello and Negele. These contrasting landscapes create opportunities for Ethiopian endemics, Rift Valley waterbirds, raptors, woodland species and localized southern specialities.
A return through the Langano-Abijatta-Shalla lake system leads back to the northern highlands for a focused Jemma Valley morning and an Ankober finale. Hotels are used through much of the route and camping is part of the published accommodation format. Itinerary
Day 1
Addis Ababa arrival and introductory birding
Meet at Bole International Airport, review the route and begin with hotel-garden and reservoir birding west of the city before returning to Addis Ababa.
Day 2
Sululta Plain, Debre Libanos and Jemma Gorge
Travel north across the Sululta Plain, then explore the Jemma Gorge and the forest near Debre Libanos for highland, cliff and forest birds before returning to Addis Ababa.
Day 3
Rift Valley journey to Awash
Leave Addis Ababa via the Debre Zeit crater-lake area, pause for birding around Lake Beseka and continue to the Awash base.
Day 4
Full day in Awash National Park
Search savanna, riverine and dry-country habitats for parrots, bustards, barbets, weavers and raptors, with mammals also possible.
Day 5
Ziway, Koka and the Langano lake country
Travel toward Langano with birding at Lake Ziway and Koka Dam, then work the Abijatta-Shalla lake shore for waterbirds, waders and open-country species.
Day 6
Into the Bale Mountains
Continue into Bale Mountains National Park and begin searching the highland habitats for endemic and near-endemic birds.
Day 7
Sof Omar excursion
Make a day trip toward Sof Omar, using roadside and woodland stops for southern and dry-country species with Salvadori’s Serin as a principal target.
Day 8
Sanetti Plateau highlands
Climb from Goba through forest to the Sanetti Plateau, walking in the high Afro-alpine landscape and checking its small lakes for waterbirds.
Day 9
Bale to Wondo Genet
Bird during the transfer to the green Wondo Genet area, where forest birds and primates may be encountered around the new base.
Day 10
Hawassa wetlands and woodland
Continue to Hawassa for lakeside, woodland and wetland birding, including hornbills, rails, geese, storks, kingfishers and raptors.
Day 11
South to Yabello
Travel south with birding stops, then explore woodland west of Yabello late in the day for Stresemann’s Bushcrow and other localized species.
Day 12
Yabello Wildlife Sanctuary
Spend a full field day in the sanctuary, using a picnic lunch to maximize time for White-tailed Swallow, bushcrow and other southern specialities.
Day 13
Yabello to Negele
Bird around Mega in the morning, then drive east toward Negele with further stops along the route.
Day 14
Negele birding
Explore several localities around Negele, concentrating on the area’s woodland and open-country bird communities.
Day 15
Return to Lake Langano
Make the long drive back to Lake Langano, adding birding breaks where travel time and conditions allow.
Day 16
Langano, Abijatta and Shalla lakes
Compare the three contrasting Rift Valley lakes, working their shores and surrounding woodlands for waterbirds and terrestrial species.
Day 17
Northern transfer to Debre Birhan
Bird the Langano cliffs in the morning, complete the southern loop through Addis Ababa and continue north to Debre Birhan.
Day 18
Alem Ketema and Jemma Valley
Leave early for the Alem Ketema area and the Jemma Valley, timing the visit for the best chance of hearing and locating Harwood’s Francolin before returning to Debre Birhan.
Day 19
Ankober and departure
Visit the Rift Valley escarpment near Ankober early, then return to Addis Ababa for a day room, farewell dinner and evening airport transfer.
