14-Day Gabon Birding Expedition: Rainforests, Savannas and Coastal Wetlands
A 14-day small-group birding expedition linking Lopé's forest-savanna mosaic, Ipassa rainforest, Loango wetlands and the open savannas near Lékoni.
About this tour
This 14-day expedition crosses four of Gabon's contrasting birding regions in a small group of three to twelve guests. The route begins in Libreville, continues through the forest-savanna mosaic of Lopé National Park and spends three full birding days around the remote Ipassa research station near Makokou. It then shifts west to the lagoons, wetlands, coastal forest and savannas of Loango National Park before a final southeast excursion from Franceville toward Lékoni.
The Ipassa section is the specialist rainforest core. Early starts and flexible trail choices give the group time to search different forest layers, stream edges and dense undergrowth. African Piculet, White-bellied Kingfisher and Blackcap Illadopsis are possible highlights named by the operator. Searches may also focus on Nkulengu Rail, with Lyre-tailed Honeyguide and Rachel's Malimbe among the other possibilities. These are wild birds, so weather, seasonal activity and field conditions affect every sighting.
Loango adds a different mix of waterbird and coastal habitats, with time around accessible lagoons, waterways, forest edges and open savannas. The route may also produce incidental encounters with forest elephants, buffaloes and primates, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. A separate gorilla trek can be discussed in advance, subject to permits and an additional charge.
Accommodation ranges from city hotels and park lodges to simple research-station lodging at Ipassa, where electricity, running water and sanitary facilities may be limited. Private 4x4 vehicles are used on the road sections, with no more than three paying guests per vehicle, while domestic flights connect Makokou, Port-Gentil, Franceville and Libreville. Dates and the final price are confirmed on request after the operator rechecks flights, accommodation, park fees and other operating arrangements.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Libreville
Meet the local team at Libreville International Airport and transfer to the city hotel. The tour leader introduces the route, habitats and birding priorities, with a short local orientation possible if the arrival schedule allows.
Day 2
Libreville to Lopé National Park
Travel inland by private 4x4 from the coast toward Lopé National Park. Birding stops may be made when road and field conditions permit, followed by an introductory session along savanna and forest edges if arrival time allows.
Day 3
Lopé forest-savanna mosaic
Spend the full day birding open savannas, gallery forests and tropical forest edges. Early and late sessions make use of the most active hours, while incidental sightings may include forest buffaloes or primates.
Day 4
Lopé to Makokou and Ipassa
Make the long overland journey to Makokou and continue to Ipassa research station. The accommodation is simple and functional, reflecting the remote forest setting.
Day 5
Central African rainforest birding
Begin early on forest trails around Ipassa, searching undergrowth, stream edges and different canopy levels. Possible species named for this section include African Piculet, White-bellied Kingfisher and Blackcap Illadopsis, together with forest bulbuls and greenbuls.
Day 6
Searching for Ipassa forest specialists
Continue specialist rainforest birding in habitat selected by the guide for current conditions. Nkulengu Rail can be sought in suitable cover. The plan also considers Lyre-tailed Honeyguide and Rachel's Malimbe, and a dusk session may be added when useful.
Day 7
Flexible final day at Ipassa
Revisit the most productive areas or use alternative trails according to the group's priorities and the birds already recorded. The flexible schedule also allows additional time for careful observation and photography.
Day 8
Makokou to Libreville
A short final forest session may be possible before transfer to Makokou Airport. Fly back to Libreville, subject to the domestic service operating, then transfer to the hotel for an evening at leisure.
Day 9
Libreville to Loango National Park
Fly from Libreville to Port-Gentil and continue by private 4x4 through Omboué toward Loango. Depending on arrival time, begin exploring the coastal mix of lagoons, forest, savanna and wetland habitats.
Day 10
Loango lagoons and wetlands
Use accessible waterways, wetland margins and coastal lagoons for a full day of birding. Kingfishers, herons, raptors and other water-associated birds may be encountered, with incidental opportunities for larger wildlife.
Day 11
Loango coastal forest and savannas
Shift attention to forest edges, coastal vegetation and open savannas, adapting the route to local conditions. Optional gorilla trekking can be arranged separately in advance when permits are available and is not part of the standard package.
Day 12
Loango to Port-Gentil and Libreville
Drive back toward Port-Gentil after breakfast and fly to Libreville. Transfer to the hotel, with the remainder of the day free unless the arrival schedule supports an optional local outing.
Day 13
Franceville and the Lékoni savannas
Fly to Franceville and continue toward the grasslands, rocky formations and forest edges around Lékoni. Birding focuses on open-country and savanna species before returning to Franceville for the night.
Day 14
Return to Libreville and departure
A short early birding session may be possible before the domestic flight from Franceville to Libreville. Continue to the international departure with enough connection time allowed after the domestic sector.
