11-Day Gambia Birding Expedition
Explore the rich birdlife of The Gambia and Senegal on an eleven-day expedition through some of West Africa’s most diverse and rewarding habitats. Guided by expert local bird guides, this journey combines coastal wetlands, savannahs, forests, rivers, and remote reserves, offering exceptional opportunities to observe both resident and migratory species across renowned birding sites and newly explored locations.
About this tour
The eleven-day Expedition Gambia–Senegal is an immersive birdwatching journey through one of West Africa’s most rewarding and still relatively undiscovered birding regions. Developed during our annual field research trips, this expedition combines classic birding locations with newly explored sites, offering a rich and varied experience for both dedicated birders and nature enthusiasts.
Led by knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate local bird guides, the tour provides deep insight into the landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems of The Gambia and Senegal. The journey begins along the Gambian coast, where a remarkable range of habitats can be explored within a short distance. Open savannah grasslands host raptors and ground-dwelling species, while peaceful coastal lagoons bordered by mangroves attract a wide variety of waterbirds. These environments gradually transition into gallery forests, river systems, rice paddies, and farmlands—each habitat revealing its own distinctive birdlife.
Key highlights of the expedition include some of the region’s most productive birding destinations, such as Kotu Creek, Baobolong Wetlands, Kousemar Island, Wassadu, and Niokolokoba Nature Reserve. These areas regularly produce excellent sightings of both resident and migratory species. Waders such as Common Greenshank and Common Redshank forage along shallow waters, while the vivid colors of Malachite and Blue-breasted Kingfishers brighten the riverbanks. Pied Kingfishers are often seen hovering above the water, joined by the impressive Giant Kingfisher. Pelicans glide calmly across creeks and wetlands, while species like Oriole Warbler and White-crowned Robin-Chat add both color and song to the surrounding vegetation.
As the expedition moves inland and across borders, the diversity continues to expand. River journeys, wetland excursions, woodland and savannah exploration, and visits to remote forest reserves provide opportunities to observe raptors, forest specialists, waterbirds, and large savannah species. Boat trips through river channels and wetlands offer close encounters with species such as African Finfoot, African Fish Eagle, and a wide range of herons, storks, and eagles, while forest walks and farmland birding reveal colorful rollers, bee-eaters, turacos, and numerous passerines.
With its carefully planned itinerary, varied habitats, and expertly guided birding, this eleven-day expedition offers an exceptional overview of the birdlife of The Gambia and Senegal. It is a rewarding journey for birdwatchers seeking species diversity, authentic landscapes, and a deeper connection with West Africa’s natural heritage.
