Rio Lagartos Birdwatching and Mangrove Boat Tour
A Rio Lagartos birdwatching day for flamingos, mangroves, coastal dunes, restricted-range birds and optional early nocturnal targets.
About this tour
Explore the varied coastal habitats of Ría Lagartos on the northern Yucatan coast. Mangroves, coastal dunes, reedbeds, grassland, low forest and petenes support flamingos, rails, herons, shorebirds and several restricted-range peninsula specialties.
A boat journey through the mangrove ria is central to the experience. The search may include American Flamingo, Mangrove Warbler, Clapper Rail, egrets, terns, kingfishers and other wetland birds. On land, specialized dune and scrub habitat provides opportunities for Mexican Sheartail, Yucatan Wren, Black-throated Bobwhite, Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture and Lesser Roadrunner.
Birders hoping for Yucatan Nightjar should begin well before sunrise or stay near the reserve the previous night, subject to the final arrangement. Travel time from Mérida is substantial, so pickup and boat timing are confirmed for the requested date. Species and concentrations vary with season and local water conditions.
