Private Full-Day Merzouga Desert Birdwatching
Start before sunrise for a private full day by 4x4 through Merzouga’s seasonal water, dunes, wadis, fields and desert plains.
About this tour
Leave the confirmed Merzouga hotel or camp before sunrise, when cooler air and early light can make desert birds more active. Mohamed Oubadi leads the day by private 4x4, choosing a route across the contrasting habitats around Erg Chebbi rather than treating the dunes as a single uniform landscape.
A seasonal lake or another small water point can draw Spotted and Crowned Sandgrouse, especially early in the day. Dune margins, dry riverbeds and open plains add possibilities such as Desert Sparrow, Greater Hoopoe-Lark, Cream-colored Courser, African Desert Warbler, Desert Wheatear, Fulvous Babbler and Trumpeter Finch. Egyptian Nightjar is conditional on season and suitable timing, while raptors such as Barbary Falcon may occur without being predictable.
Later stops can include cultivated ground around Hassi Labiad, where fields and small patches of cover create further observation and photography opportunities. Mohamed changes the sequence with water levels, weather, road access and recent activity, allowing more time where birds are moving. Guests should bring binoculars, sun protection, suitable walking shoes, drinking water and a light layer for the early start.
The published one-day format includes Mohamed’s private local guiding, 4x4 transport and pickup and drop-off at the confirmed Merzouga-area base. Accommodation is not included unless separately agreed. Price, group size and fixed dates remain on request, and the final proposal confirms the meeting time and payment terms. All sightings depend on season and natural conditions.
