About this tour
Avis Dam brings several Windhoek habitats together in one compact birding area. Over two to three hours, this private guided walk can move between grassland, thorn scrub, rocky cliffs, mudflats and the lake edge, making it useful for both an initial Namibia list and a focused search for local specialties.
The namesake Rockrunner is a principal interest on the rocky slopes, while open water and muddy margins can add Maccoa Duck, South African Shelduck, Kittlitz’s Plover, Ruff and other waterbirds when conditions suit them. Pririt Batis and Pied Barbet can be among the thorn-scrub possibilities, alongside Kalahari Scrub Robin and Crimson-breasted Shrike. A stop near a productive water point can also be worthwhile for small seedeaters.
Jacob Henry adjusts the circuit for recent observations, the season and the group’s priorities. The walk can emphasize list building, careful photography, sound recording or a more relaxed pace, but sightings remain uncertain because all birds are wild.
The group price includes guiding and the Avis Dam entry fee. Guests make their own way to the parking area, and personal travel insurance is not included.
