Look for winter birds and animal tracks on a private four-to-five-hour walk through the woods and coast of Ptasi Raj, with a warm drink along the way.
About this tour
From October through March, Ptasi Raj offers a quieter season of birdwatching and tracking beside the Baltic. On this private four-to-five-hour walk, Ryan combines woodland and coastal observation with a search for signs left by mammals. Prints and other clues can reveal the presence of foxes, deer or moose even when the animals remain out of sight.
The birding moves between forest, wetland viewpoints and open coast. Watch for resident woodland birds such as robins and Black Woodpeckers, and scan the water for winter visitors including Long-tailed Ducks, Tufted Ducks and Common Goldeneyes. White-tailed Eagles may also be encountered. The exact mix depends on the conditions and the time of winter.
Two hides provide places to stop and look across the reserve. Most of the walking is on fairly level terrain, with steps at the hides, but mud or ice can change the footing. Bring sturdy boots, warm clothing and layers suitable for an exposed coastal walk. Binoculars and a field guide are included.
A hot chocolate or spiced tea adds a warming break during the outing. Light rain or snow need not prevent the walk, while prolonged heavy rain, heavy snowfall or storm winds can lead to cancellation for safety. A meal at a nearby tavern can be an optional way to finish; it is separate from the guided walk.
