Sani Pass Birding Tour from Underberg
A full-day specialist 4x4 birding route from Underberg through Sani Pass to Lesotho’s alpine highlands for regional endemic birds.
About this tour
Travel from the Southern Drakensberg foothills into the Lesotho highlands on a specialist full-day birding journey through Sani Pass. The steep altitudinal climb connects mist-belt forest, grassland, montane scrub and alpine habitats, allowing the guide to search several distinct bird communities during one route.
The day begins at about 6:00 am in the Underberg or Himeville area and uses a high-clearance 4x4 for the mountain road and border crossing. Stops are selected around current sightings, season and habitat conditions. The lower slopes can hold Barratt’s Warbler, Bush Blackcap, Gurney’s Sugarbird and Buff-streaked Chat, while higher elevations bring opportunities for Grey Tit, Sickle-winged Chat, Layard’s Warbler and Fairy Flycatcher.
Drakensberg Rockjumper, Drakensberg Siskin and Mountain Pipit are central high-altitude targets. The open mountain landscape can also produce Bearded Vulture. These are wild birds and no individual species is guaranteed, but the route is designed to give serious birders access to the habitats where these regional specialties occur.
A professional local guide, comfortable 4x4 transport, refreshments and a scenic picnic lunch are included. The stated rate starts at ZAR 1,500 per person. A passport is required for the border crossing into Lesotho, and travelers are responsible for checking visa and entry requirements for their nationality. The outing normally returns between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
