Cheer Pheasant

Catreus wallichii (Hardwicke, 1827)

Cheer Pheasant, Catreus wallichii, is a pheasant of the Himalayas in the Oriental Region. It belongs to the family Phasianidae and was described by Hardwicke in 1827. It is the only species placed in the genus Catreus. In the hills and scrub of its range, it is marked by rather subdued plumage, with grey-buff tones, a long grey crest and a tail of 18 feathers, the middle pair being the longest. The female is a little smaller than the male. It breeds on steep cliffs in summer, and the male pairs with one female.
