Vanellus vanellus
The Northern Lapwing is a medium-sized bird with a distinctive appearance. It has a black and white head pattern, a greenish back, and white underparts. During the breeding season, it develops a striking crest. This species is known for its acrobatic flight displays and its loud, distinctive 'pee-wit' call. Northern Lapwings are commonly found in open farmland, wet meadows, and marshes across Europe and Asia. They are often seen foraging for insects and small invertebrates in muddy areas. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and agricultural intensification, the Northern Lapwing is still relatively widespread and is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
