White-headed Duck

Oxyura leucocephala

The White-headed Duck is a striking waterfowl species known for its distinctive white head and bright blue bill. This medium-sized duck is native to southern Europe, North Africa, and western and central Asia. It is often found in freshwater wetlands, lakes, and lagoons. The White-headed Duck is an excellent diver and feeds primarily on aquatic plants, invertebrates, and small fish. This species is known for its elaborate courtship displays and is considered a symbol of conservation efforts in its range due to habitat loss and hunting pressures. Conservation programs are in place to protect and restore its wetland habitats.
