This morning outing pairs two very different habitats south of San Pedro de Atacama: the orchard-lined oasis at Jere Canyon and the open waters of Chaxa Lagoon in the Atacama Salt Flat. Valeria Heindl leads the private excursion as a shorter alternative to her full-day circuit, concentrating the available time on the oasis and salt-flat sections.
An early visit to Jere Canyon makes use of the period when oasis wildlife is most active. Birdwatching follows the vegetation around the traditional orchards, with attention to the calls and movements that help reveal birds in this greener pocket of the desert. The emphasis is on careful observation rather than adding the northern highland sites to a compressed schedule.
The second part takes place at Laguna Chaxa. Here the focus moves to shorebirds and flamingos, particularly their feeding behavior. The contrast between the canyon vegetation and the exposed salt-flat lagoon gives the morning a clear change of setting and birding subjects. Species present and activity levels depend on the conditions during the visit.
At 4.5 hours, this is the more compact of Valeria's two half-day options. It is intended for birders with limited time or a smaller budget who still want specialist guiding. It remains a private tour for two to three participants, with room in the vehicle kept comfortable for the group.
The confirmed price is USD 204 per person. The package includes a private 4x4, birding guidance in English and Spanish, entrance fees, snacks, mineral water and field guides. Oasis possibilities include Black-hooded Sierra Finch, Black Siskin, Eared Dove, Chiguanco Thrush, Plain-mantled Tit-Spinetail and Spot-winged Pigeon. Burrowing Owl may also be encountered along the morning route. Waterbirds at Chaxa can include Andean Avocet, Puna Plover and flamingos; observations vary with conditions.
