About this tour

The Nové Mlýny reservoirs provide the winter counterpart to Petr Suvorov’s spring-to-autumn fishpond outings in South Moravia. The system lies below the Pálava hills and combines three large reservoirs. The middle Věstonice reservoir is protected for its importance to birds, while viewpoints around the wider complex allow the route to respond to ice, water levels and where flocks are feeding or resting.

Petr recommends this outing from roughly mid-October through February. When much of the surface freezes, remaining areas of open water can concentrate waterfowl and make several observation points especially productive. The field plan can look for Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese, Eurasian Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Smew, Common Merganser, Common Goldeneye, Pygmy and Great Cormorants, and White-tailed Eagle. These are realistic winter priorities supplied by Petr, not guaranteed sightings.

A compact visit can be arranged as a half-day session. Covering several sectors may require the full period of usable winter daylight, which Petr notes can end at about 3 PM. The sequence of stops is therefore agreed for the date, current ice and weather, the guest’s birding priorities and the amount of walking or photography desired.

Petr offers guiding alongside other professional responsibilities, so dates must be requested in advance and confirmed for his availability. The meeting point, transport needs, exact duration and price are agreed through the BirdWatch inquiry before booking. Guests should expect exposed winter conditions and follow access rules around the protected middle reservoir.

Itinerary

Day 1
Winter waterbird circuit at Nové Mlýny
Věstonice Reservoir, Nové Mlýny
Reservoir viewpoints and access paths exposed to winter weather.

Meet at the access point confirmed with Petr and assess the current ice, visibility and bird movements before choosing the sequence of stops. A half-day route concentrates on the strongest nearby viewpoints, while a longer session can inspect several reservoir sectors within the available daylight. Scanning focuses on goose flocks, diving and dabbling ducks, cormorants and White-tailed Eagle without treating any species as guaranteed. The finish time and walking component remain flexible because winter light can become unsuitable by about 3 PM.
