A 14-day Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan journey from Korgalzhyn wetlands to the Tien Shan and Taukum Desert, timed for spring migration and breeding birds.
About this tour
Follow a broad Central Asian migration route across wetlands, steppe, alpine valleys and desert from Astana to Almaty. The journey begins around Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve, where vast reed beds and lakes support waterbirds, warblers, raptors and steppe species. It then crosses to southeastern Kazakhstan and continues into Kyrgyzstan for high-elevation birding in the Tien Shan.
Three days near Karakol explore mountain valleys and Chon Ashuu Pass, reaching 3,822 metres above sea level. White-bellied and Brown dippers, Himalayan Rubythroat, Ibisbill and other alpine birds are among the documented priorities. The final section moves through the Taukum Desert, where open steppe, saxsaul and desert wetlands create opportunities for McQueen’s Bustard, Caspian Plover, sandgrouse, larks and other dry-country specialists.
This is an active itinerary with domestic travel, long road sectors and substantial habitat changes. Accommodation ranges from tourist hotels to a desert camp, while the group is accompanied by a birding leader and local support. Arrive in Astana for the start of the Central Asian journey. Final flight timing, transfer and hotel arrangements are confirmed before departure.
Spend three days exploring reed-fringed lakes, virgin steppe and marshes around Korgalzhyn. The route seeks migrant warblers, wagtails, Bluethroat, steppe raptors and the reserve’s rich waterbird concentrations.
Daily plans adjust to wind, water levels and recent activity, with time divided between open steppe and wetland edges.
Fly to Almaty and begin birding in the Kaskelen sector of Ili-Alatau National Park. Forest and mountain-edge habitats offer possibilities such as Azure Tit, Blue Whistling Thrush, Blue-capped Redstart and Siberian Meadow Bunting.
Travel east to Charyn River Gorge, a dramatic dry landscape cut through colorful rock formations. Birding focuses on canyon, scrub and open-country species before continuing the regional circuit.
Search the Sogety plains for Pallas’s Sandgrouse before crossing toward Kyrgyzstan. Agricultural and upland sections may add Rock Sparrow, Upland Buzzard and Saker Falcon while the landscape rises toward the mountains.
Explore mountain habitats around Karakol for three days, including an ascent toward Chon Ashuu Pass at 3,822 metres. Fast rivers, alpine meadows and slopes are searched for dippers, Ibisbill, Himalayan Rubythroat and high-elevation raptors.
Routes remain flexible for mountain weather and road access.
Bird back toward Almaty through village and agricultural landscapes. The long transfer allows selected stops for swallows, orioles, shrikes, warblers and other birds of cultivated country.
Spend the final three days in the Taukum Desert among steppe, wildflower fields, saxsaul and remote wetlands. Early starts seek McQueen’s Bustard displays, Caspian Plover, sandgrouse, larks and other desert specialists.
The group uses a desert camp and travels minor roads to reach a varied set of dry-country habitats before returning to Almaty.
