This private 9.5-hour outing uses a full day to explore the contrasting bird habitats of Windhoek and its outskirts. Jacob Henry plans the route around recent conditions, the group’s target list and the balance between active searching, photography, recording and slower observation.
Possible stops include IJG Trails, Avis Dam, Parliament Gardens, Daan Viljoen Park, Goreangab Dam, Gammams Water Works, the Windhoek Botanical Gardens and selected farms or water points around the city. The final combination is deliberately flexible: rocky slopes can be useful for Rockrunner and other escarpment birds, thornveld adds dry-country species, and dams or water works broaden the day with ducks, waders and seedeaters.
The search can range from Rockrunner, White-tailed Shrike and Short-toed Rock-Thrush to wetland birds such as Maccoa Duck, South African Shelduck and Kittlitz’s Plover. Black-faced Waxbill, Burnt-necked Eremomela and Bradfield’s Swift add further possibilities. These are wild birds, so the route improves the search without guaranteeing any sighting.
