About this tour

Explore Otago Harbour by boat with Rachel McGregor and Port To Port Cruises & Wildlife Tours. This small-group outing travels from Port Chalmers or Portobello toward Taiaroa Head, combining focused seabird observation with commentary on the harbour's natural and maritime history.

Northern Royal Albatrosses are a central focus around their Taiaroa Head breeding area. The cruise also watches the water and headlands for visiting albatross species, penguins, shags, wading birds, terns and other coastal birds. Wildlife remains unpredictable, so the route and viewing stops respond to current sea conditions and activity. When conditions allow, the boat may travel farther toward open water, where additional oceanic seabirds and marine mammals are possible.

The purpose-built MV Sootychaser has open viewing areas, a sheltered heated cabin, onboard bathroom facilities and a public-address system for commentary. Binoculars are available to use, and the group is normally limited to about 12 to 14 passengers.

The cruise lasts about 90 minutes from Port Chalmers or two hours from Portobello, returning to the same departure point. Current sailing time, meeting instructions and the best departure wharf for each booking are confirmed after inquiry.
