Santa Eulalia Canyon Birdwatching Day
Follow the Santa Eulalia River from willow woodland into Andean scrub on a day trip from Lima, searching for Great Inca Finch, endemic hummingbirds and river birds.
About this tour
The Santa Eulalia road gives a day visitor from Lima access to several habitats on the western Andean slope. Riverbank woodland, rocky canyon country and higher scrub each hold a different set of birds. Ecologística Perú follows that progression with roadside stops and birding beside the river, rather than spending the day at a single viewpoint.
The lower valley’s willow woodland is the first focus. Black-necked Woodpecker, Peruvian Pygmy Owl, Collared Warbling Finch and Peruvian Sheartail are among the birds searched for here. Blue-and-yellow Tanager and the contrasting Yellow-billed and Pied-crested Tit Tyrants add to the woodland possibilities. Activity in this first habitat determines how long the guide spends at each stop.
As the road rises, check the moving water for Torrent Duck and White-capped Dipper. Scrub before Autisha bridge is a place to search for Great Inca Finch. Around the bridge, scanning the sky may reveal Andean Condor or swifts against the canyon walls. The upper stops introduce hummingbirds and birds of the drier slopes, including Black Metaltail, Bronze-tailed Comet, Rusty-crowned Tit Spinetail, Rusty-bellied Brushfinch and Canyon Canastero.
This is a one-day canyon itinerary, distinct from the longer Santa Eulalia journey that reaches the high puna. A guide, transport from a Lima hotel or the airport, a box lunch and drinking water are included. Per-person rates depend on the size of your party. Conditions in the valley change through the year: December to March is the wetter period, while April to November is generally dry. Carry layers for the changing elevation and sun protection for exposed stops. Birds remain wild and the route cannot guarantee any individual species.
