3-Hour Tagus River Birdwatching Boat Tour
A quiet three-hour birdwatching boat trip from Escaroupim, exploring Tagus River islands and channels with a local nature guide.
About this tour
Explore a little-visited stretch of the Tagus River by quiet boat from Cais do Escaroupim, less than forty minutes from Lisbon. The three-hour outing is designed specifically for birdwatchers and photographers, following river channels and islands that are difficult to observe from the bank.
Local guides interpret the river landscape and its wildlife while adapting the route to water levels and bird activity. Egret Island is the seasonal highlight from March to July. Mixed colonies there may hold Grey Herons, Little and Cattle Egrets, Eurasian Spoonbills and Glossy Ibises, together with Squacco and Black-crowned Night Herons. Other regular possibilities along the route include Great Cormorant, Osprey, Black Kite, Common Buzzard, Booted Eagle, White Stork, Common Kingfisher, European Bee-eater and Sand Martin.
The boat maintains a respectful distance from nesting birds and does not land on Egret Island. The usual circuit also passes other islands and river landscapes around Escaroupim, with the exact route adjusted to tide and conditions. Comfortable clothing, binoculars and a camera are recommended.
