About this tour

Build a private birding, wildlife and back-roads journey through Spain or Portugal with Duncan Gough, an ornithologist and long-time Iberian travel specialist. The itinerary begins with a questionnaire covering the participants’ dates, preferred places, wildlife interests, transport style and accommodation budget.

Burgos is the confirmed map centre because many of Duncan’s tours travel through the nearby Sierra de la Demanda, an area he knows particularly well. A route may include mountain viewpoints around 6,000 feet and the Sad Hill Cemetery film location, where surrounding habitat can offer Bee-eater, Hoopoe, eagles, vultures and deer.

Other possible highlights span kites, harriers and falcons, together with Rollers, storks, flamingos and wetland birds. The natural-history focus can also include Wild Boar, Iberian Ibex, reptiles, butterflies and spring orchids. Routes may combine mountains, gorges, forests, farmland, wetlands, small villages, regional food, culture and history.

Motorcycle touring is Duncan’s speciality, but alternative vehicle arrangements can be discussed. Accommodation is usually based in small towns or villages, often using family-run hotels and local restaurants. This is an inquiry-based bespoke service: Duncan’s expenses and daily guiding wage, the route, duration, transport, accommodation, dates and final target list are confirmed in an individual quotation.
