10-day Eastern Patagonia Birding: Endemics and Seabird Colonies
Follow Argentina’s Atlantic side from Bahía Blanca to Puerto Deseado on a ten-day birding journey through arid steppe, coastal habitats and penguin colonies.
About this tour
Follow the Atlantic side of Patagonia on a ten-day, nine-night birding journey from Bahía Blanca to Puerto Deseado. The route connects the southern edge of the Pampas with thorn woodland, dry steppe and a succession of coastal birding sites. It is designed around the contrast between land birds of the arid interior and the seabirds concentrated along the shore.
Bahía Blanca introduces the transition out of the Pampas. Birding here combines the broader grassland community with more localized interests such as Pampas Meadowlark and Olrog's Gull. Continue south through Las Grutas and Puerto Madryn, searching the dry habitats for Argentine specialties and near-endemics. Sandy Gallito, White-throated Cacholote, Rusty-backed Monjita, Hudson's Black Tyrant and Cinnamon Warbling Finch are among the possibilities.
Farther down the Atlantic coast, the journey heads toward Comodoro Rivadavia. Cabo Dos Bahías is included for its Magellanic Penguin colony. The regional penguin cycle extends from September through April, encompassing nesting, chick rearing and molt; the exact activity encountered depends on the timing of the visit. Other sought-after birds in this stretch include Chubut Steamer Duck, Band-tailed Earthcreeper, Patagonian Canastero and Carbonated Sierra Finch.
Puerto Deseado forms the last region of the itinerary. A possible boat visit to Penguin Island offers the opportunity to see a Western Rockhopper Penguin breeding colony. A boat excursion also explores the Deseado River estuary, where Red-legged Cormorant is one of the highlights among the coastal birdlife. These outings add a different perspective on the cliffs, islands and shoreline after the long southward route.
The emphasis remains on birding across the steppe and coast, with the landscape providing a changing setting for each section. The tour does not depend on a single species encounter: birds vary with season and local activity, and the island visit is an opportunity within the proposed program. Current departure arrangements, the detailed overnight schedule and price are supplied on request. Confirm the timing of seabird-colony visits when discussing the departure.
