Broad-winged Hawk

Buteo platypterus

The Broad-winged Hawk is a medium-sized raptor found in the forests of North and South America. With a wingspan of around 3 feet, it is known for its broad wings and soaring flight. This hawk preys on small mammals, amphibians, and insects, and is often observed hunting from perches within the forest canopy. During the breeding season, it builds nests in the dense foliage of deciduous or mixed forests. The species is known for its distinctive high-pitched call, often heard during its migratory flights. Broad-winged Hawks are important indicators of forest health and are vulnerable to habitat loss and deforestation.
