Eurasian Wryneck

Jynx torquilla

The Eurasian Wryneck, scientifically known as Jynx torquilla, is a small, cryptically colored bird found in Europe and Asia. It is known for its distinctive habit of twisting its neck in a snake-like manner when threatened, which serves as a defense mechanism. This species primarily inhabits open woodlands, forest edges, and scrubland, where it forages for ants and insects by probing into crevices with its long, sticky tongue. The Eurasian Wryneck is characterized by its mottled brown and grey plumage, with intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage. It is considered a medium-sized bird, measuring around 16-18 centimeters in length. The conservation status of the Eurasian Wryneck is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its widespread distribution and stable population.
