Suomenlinna Bird Photography Workshop
A private four-hour Suomenlinna bird-photography workshop, using the ferry from central Helsinki and the island’s evening light and coastal birds.
About this tour
This private bird-photography workshop takes place on Suomenlinna, the inhabited fortress islands reached by ferry from central Helsinki. Samuel welcomes photographers at any experience level and adapts the session to individual learning goals. The group meets at Kauppatori and aims to reach the islands about three hours before sunset, continuing to photograph until the light fades before returning toward the pier.
The workshop combines fieldcraft with practical photographic guidance. Samuel can help with positioning, camera settings, composition and anticipating behaviour, or give experienced guests more space to work independently. Locations are selected for bird activity and usable light, but encounters remain unpredictable. Playback and baiting are not used, and the route respects both nesting birds and the privacy of people who live on Suomenlinna.
Barnacle Geese are a prominent spring and summer subject, while Common Eider, White Wagtail, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Northern Wheatear, Common Gull and Arctic Tern are among the other possible coastal species. Their presence, behaviour and approachability change through the season, so no image or species can be guaranteed. The workshop runs between April 20 and July 20 and lasts up to four hours.
Participants need their own camera equipment; a lens reaching 300 mm or more is recommended, with a shorter lens useful for wider compositions. Expect walking on gravel, rock and some short steep slopes, although an easier route can be discussed. Wind can make the islands colder than central Helsinki, so sturdy footwear and warm layers are important. The HSL ferry ticket, food, drinks and insurance are not included.

Ferry to Suomenlinna and evening bird photography
Meet Samuel at the Kauppatori ferry departure area and cross to Suomenlinna, aiming to arrive about three hours before sunset. Walk between selected coastal locations while working on fieldcraft, settings, composition and bird behaviour, with the route adapted to light, weather and guest objectives. Continue until the light fades, then return toward the pier for the ferry to central Helsinki; the public-transport ticket is separate.

Do I need previous birding experience?
No. Samuel adapts the outing for experienced birders, beginners, nature lovers and families.
Are dates fixed?
No. These are private outings by request. Send preferred dates and group size through BirdWatch.info so availability can be confirmed.
What should I bring?
Bring binoculars if you have them, comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, water, snacks and mosquito repellent when needed. Samuel can usually lend an extra pair of binoculars.
Does Samuel use playback or baiting?
No. Samuel publicly states that he does not use playback to attract birds, and the photo workshop also avoids playback and baiting.
Can photos and image order be changed?
Yes. The current photos are review selections from Samuel’s public tour pages and can be approved, reordered, replaced or removed.
