Private Tana Delta Birding Day with Ibrahim Hiri
Explore the Tana River Delta privately with local guide Ibrahim Hiri, combining wetland, grassland, mangrove and forest-edge birding as conditions allow.
About this tour
The Tana River Delta is a broad mosaic of floodplains, wetlands, grasslands, mangroves, coastal forest patches and riverine woodland. Local guide Ibrahim Hiri, representing the community conservation network, leads a private day through habitats that are practical for current water levels, access and bird activity.
Field priorities can include African Skimmer, Collared Pratincole, Osprey, Red-necked Falcon, Malindi Pipit, Southern Banded Snake Eagle and Little Rush Warbler. Malachite, Mangrove, Grey-headed and Striped Kingfishers are additional possibilities, alongside prinias, cisticolas and other delta birds. The route and every sighting depend on season and natural conditions.
The working base is the Tana Delta Rangers Camp in Darga Algi village, and advance coordination is essential. A compact tent is required, and travellers need provisions to cater for themselves. When an upriver section would help the birding plan, Ibrahim can coordinate a community boat; the boat is optional rather than a guaranteed part of every day.
Ibrahim’s quoted conservation fee is USD 25 per adult or USD 10 per child. Guiding is quoted at USD 50, with the final total confirmed for the agreed number of days. The community boat is quoted at KES 4,000 without fuel or KES 14,000 with fuel. BirdWatch confirms the applicable combination, transport arrangements, access and final proposal after inquiry.
Local guiding is the supported core inclusion. Conservation charges, meals, tent and self-catering supplies, boat and fuel remain excluded unless the written proposal expressly includes them.
