24-Day North Peru Birding Tour from Tarapoto to Chiclayo
A 24-day crossing of northern Peru from Amazonian foothills to the Pacific coast, combining cloud forest, Andean, dry-forest and coastal birding.
About this tour
Cross northern Peru from Tarapoto to Chiclayo on an intensive birding journey through one of South America's most varied avian corridors. Karana Bird Tours links Amazonian foothills, Cordillera Escalera cloud forest, Moyobamba wetlands, the high forests of Abra Patricia, the Gocta and Leymebamba valleys, Andean passes, Marañón dry country and the Pacific coast.
The route is designed around habitat changes and regional specialties. Potential highlights include Long-whiskered Owlet at Abra Patricia, Marvellous Spatuletail near Gocta, antpittas in montane forest, Marañón endemics around Jaén and Balsas, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, coastal seabirds and many hummingbirds, tanagers, woodpeckers and antbirds. Sightings depend on season, weather and current access and are never guaranteed.
Beyond birding, the program can include Gocta Falls, the Chachapoyas archaeological site at Kuélap, the Leymebamba museum and the pyramids around Túcume. The journey uses a sequence of lodges and hotels while moving west across the Andes. Early starts, spotlighting sessions, forest trails, a river outing, high-elevation birding and long road transfers make this best suited to travellers comfortable with an active expedition. Multiple nights at key sites create time to revisit productive habitats, respond to recent sightings and look again for difficult species without reducing the journey to a simple checklist.
Detlef expects to offer similar North Peru departures in 2027 and 2028, probably around September, while retaining flexibility to adjust the route. Current dates, price, group size, accommodation, the exact day-by-day program and any optional pre-tour extension are confirmed after inquiry.

Day 3
River birding and Juan Guerra
Take a covered-boat outing between Pumarinri and Shapaja for riverside birds, then continue by road to dry forest around Juan Guerra. The day spans riverbanks, open country and drier woodland habitats.

Search the Ricuricochas wetlands for rails, crakes and waterbirds before returning to the dry forests near Juan Guerra. Move into Tarapoto after the day's birding.
Day 5

Climb into cloud forest around the tunnel on Cordillera Escalera. Work both sides of the ridge for mixed flocks and forest birds, with Andean Cock-of-the-Rock among the possibilities.
Day 6
La Escalera and lower-elevation forests
Return to Cordillera Escalera and cover sites at different elevations, including hummingbird feeders and lower foothill forest. The changing altitude broadens the day's mix of manakins, antbirds, barbets and other forest species.
Day 7
Tarapoto to Moyobamba
