About this tour

This seasonal four-day route follows the progression from West Coast strandveld and tidal wetlands into fynbos and the Succulent Karoo. Flower displays depend on winter rainfall, while each stage also offers its own birding character.

The opening morning combines Seeberg Lookout and Geelbek Hide in West Coast National Park. The journey then moves north through Vanrhynsdorp and Nieuwoudtville, with farm flora, a guided flower outing and possible visits to the waterfall and quiver tree forest.

Akkerendam Nature Reserve and Hantam Mountain provide the final Karoo birding session before the return to Cape Town. The listed overnights include the stated meals; current dates, rate and the confirmed package are available on request.

Itinerary

Day 1
Seeberg flowers and Geelbek shorebirds
West Coast bird and flower circuit
Mixed birding habitats
Leave before sunrise and enter West Coast National Park at 07:30. Begin with the seasonal wildflowers around Seeberg Lookout, then visit Geelbek Hide for waders before returning to Le Mahi Guesthouse. Breakfast is included.
Day 2
Vanrhynsdorp and Maskam Guest Farm
West Coast bird and flower circuit
Mixed birding habitats
Start at 05:00 for the drive into the fynbos-rich Vanrhynsdorp area. Settle at Maskam Guest Farm, explore its plant life and birds, and join the guided flower activity. Overnight at Maskam with breakfast and dinner included.
Day 3
Nieuwoudtville, Succulent Karoo and Calvinia

Mixed birding habitats
Spend the morning at Maskam, then travel toward Calvinia via Vanrhyns Pass. Explore the Succulent Karoo around Nieuwoudtville; the waterfall and quiver tree forest may be visited if time permits. Overnight at Die Blou Nartjie with breakfast and dinner included.
Day 4
Akkerendam Nature Reserve and Cape Town return

Mixed birding habitats
After breakfast, take a morning birding drive in Akkerendam Nature Reserve beneath Hantam Mountain. Leave between 11:00 and 12:00 for the return to Cape Town.
