About this tour

Begin before sunrise with hotel or lodge pickup at 5:00 AM and travel to Lamin Lodge, a waterside base beside tidal mangrove channels. Breakfast is served at the lodge before the route moves onto the water.

The first part continues by traditional dugout canoe through Lamin Creek toward the River Gambia. The setting combines red and white mangroves with drier ground where baobab and rhun palms grow. Depending on the tide, weather and wildlife activity, this section can include Mouse-brown Sunbird, plovers, godwits and Great White Egret, as well as West African Manatee, African Clawless Otter, monitor lizard and green vervet monkey. Osprey, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Goliath Heron, White-backed Night Heron, Pink-backed Pelican, Gull-billed Tern and Blue-cheeked Bee-eater are also among the birds reported from the creek route.

The second part spends about three and a half hours around Lamin rice fields and the nearby Tanbi wetland landscape. Flooded paddies, vegetable plots, narrow waterways, reed beds and scrub form a varied freshwater birding area. Species reported from this section include Lizard Buzzard, Grey Kestrel, White-faced Scops Owl, Bearded Barbet, Fine-spotted Woodpecker, Intermediate Egret, African Harrier-Hawk and sunbirds, alongside Dwarf Bittern, Bar-breasted Firefinch, African Spoonbill, Malachite Kingfisher, Black Heron, African Jacana, Violet Turaco, Purple Glossy Starling and Giant Kingfisher.

The private tour finishes with a return transfer to the guest hotel or lodge, arriving at about midday. All bird and wildlife sightings depend on season, tides, weather and daily activity, so no individual species is guaranteed.
