White-faced Ibis

Plegadis chihi

The White-faced Ibis is a medium-sized wading bird with a distinctive long, down-curved bill and red eyes. In breeding plumage, it has iridescent green and maroon plumage on its head, neck, and back, with a white face and throat. Outside of the breeding season, its plumage is more dull and brown. These birds are often found in wetlands, marshes, and flooded fields, where they use their long bills to probe for insects, crustaceans, and small fish. They are known for their distinctive guttural calls and are often seen foraging in shallow water. White-faced Ibises are known for their seasonal migrations, traveling long distances between their breeding and wintering grounds.
