About this tour

Travel from Bay Bulls in a small Zodiac to explore the seabird colonies, rugged coast and marine habitats south of St. John’s. The route responds to sea conditions and wildlife activity rather than following a fixed circuit. Atlantic Puffins are a central focus, while other seabirds, whales, seals and coastal scenery may also shape the experience.

The outing is led by Wild Avalon Expeditions founders Taylor Brown and Michael O’Brien. Taylor is a professional ornithologist who completed doctoral fieldwork on the behavior of puffins and storm-petrels around Bay Bulls. Michael grew up in the community and has spent over three decades working on the water as a boat operator and guide, alongside marine qualifications and Coast Guard rescue work.

Most safaris last between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. The final length depends on weather, wildlife and the interests of the group. The Zodiac carries no more than 12 guests, and private charters can be arranged for birders, photographers, families or other small groups. Participants must be at least eight years old.

The starting price is CAD 200 per person plus HST. Departure details, conditions, clothing advice and the exact route are confirmed after a BirdWatch inquiry. Atlantic Puffins, Common Murres and Black-legged Kittiwakes are guaranteed from May through August. Puffins may remain in small numbers through September, while other birds, whales and marine wildlife depend on season and natural conditions.
