Bharatpur Chambal Short Birding Tours

India's National capital Delhi is where our Short Birding Tours of Rajasthan takes off. Our representative meets you at the airport or a chosen place in New Delhi and then drives you to Dholpur in Rajasthan. It is a 5-hour drive on a smooth highway and we should arrive at National Chambal Sanctuary of Dholpur in the afternoon around lunch time. We check into a lodge and after a short break for rest and lunch, we step out to look for birds.

National Chambal Sanctuary is home to an interesting variety of wildlife such as Gharials, Marsh Crocodiles, Gangetic Dolphins, Striped Hyenas and Wolves. But our focus is on the 250 species of resident and migratory birds that the sanctuary hosts. For the remaining half of the day, we explore the birding trails of Chambal to look for a whole range of aquatic birds, raptors, grassland and forest birds.

In the evening, we return to our lodge for dinner and overnight.

The Chambal river originates in the Vindhya mountains of Madhya Pradesh in central India, from where it flows first in the north-westerly direction into Rajasthan and then towards southeast into Uttar Pradesh. Though the river's course through Rajasthan isn't long, its passage through Dholpur attracts a lot of avian species, and it's this birding area of Chambal National Park we target. The most sought-after bird here is the Indian Skimmer, but there are a lot of other winged beauties to watch and photograph.

We go on boat safaris on the Chambal to look for a wide variety of bird species, including Bar-headed Goose, Knob-billed Duck, Ruddy Shelduck, Little Grebe, Great Thick-knee, River Lapwing, Black-bellied/River Tern, Woolly-necked Stork, Glossy Ibis, Bonelli's Eagle, Barn Owl, Brown Rock Chat, Indian Spot-billed Duck, Kentish Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Temminck's Stint, Red-naped Ibis, Laggar Falcon, Pale Sand Martin ,Gray-headed Swamphen, Little Stint, Striated Heron, Indian Gray Hornbill, Eurasian Kestrel, Bay-backed Shrike, Ashy-crowned Sparrow-Lark, Sand Lark, Rufous-fronted Prinia, Blue Rock-Thrush, Desert Wheatear, Black-bellied Tern, River Tern, Small Pratincole, Little Tern, Sarus Crane, Osprey, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Pallas's Gull, Intermediate Egret, Red-crested Pochard, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Eurasian Marsh-Harrier, Rosy Starling, Greater Flamingo, Montagu's Harrier, Crested Lark, Isabelline Wheatear, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Painted Sandgrouse, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Grey-throated Martin, Long-billed Pipit, Brown Crake, Long-legged Buzzard, Isabelline Shrike, Black-breasted Weaver, Spanish Sparrow, Black-headed Gull, Graylag Goose, Spotted Redshank, Red-headed Vulture, White-eyed Buzzard, Plain Prinia, Barn Swallow, Indian Thick-knee and many more.

At the day's end, we return to our lodge for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, we hit the road to our next Rajasthan birding hotspot, the town of Bharatpur, which is home to Keoladeo National Park, previously known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. The drive takes 2 hours and we arrive at the bird sanctuary in time to devote the whole day to birdwatching.

Keoladeo is often hailed as one of the best birding hotspots in the world. An acknowledged World Heritage Site, Keoladeo National Park hosts about 400 bird species, including several wintering migratory birds, especially waterfowls. The park's geography comprising of dry grasslands, wetlands, swamps and scrubs make it a thriving avian habitat. Every year, thousands of birders and ornithologists visit Keoladeo to see and photograph hundreds of birds. A good day of birding at Keoladeo National Park can yield up to 150 bird species, if not more. The prized sightings include Indian Courser, Sociable Lapwing, Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Indian Spotted Eagle, Dusky Eagle-Owl, Darters, Large-tailed Nightjar, Indian Nightjar, Grey Nightjar, Sarus Crane, Demoiselle Crane, Black-necked Stork, Painted Stork, Asian Openbill Storks, Common Pelican, Dalmatian Pelican, Black Bittern, Greater Painted Snipe, Marshall's Iora, Brook's Leaf Warbler and Siberian Rubythroat.

Upon our arrival in Bharatpur, we check into a resort and go birdwatching at Keoladeo National Park. We return in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Keoladeo covers an area of 29 square kilometres and has several birding trails worth exploring. After breakfast, we head out for another birding tour of Keoladeo National Park, but this time we cover different areas to seek out newer avian specialties. We target wetlands, grasslands and forests.
