Tunisia Spring Desert and Migration Birding Tour
Follow a seven-day spring route from southern desert and Djerba wetlands to cork oak forest, combining North African specialties with early migration.
About this tour
This seven-day spring itinerary leaves from an agreed pickup in Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse and finishes by returning to that same town. It is timed around the beginning of migration, when resident North African birds share a wide habitat sequence with seasonal arrivals.
Djerba’s wetlands, saltworks and mudflats introduce waterbirds and coastal movement before the route continues through oasis, desert, steppe, agricultural land and olive groves. A northern cork oak forest session changes the bird community again. Possible highlights include Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, Cream-colored Courser, Greater Hoopoe-Lark, Moussier’s Redstart and Levaillant’s Woodpecker, alongside ducks, raptors, sandgrouse and wheatears.
The programme is intended for two to eight guests and can be tuned to target priorities, recent information, weather and photographic light. Binoculars are essential, while spotting scopes are provided locally to avoid potential customs difficulty. Final logistics and commercial services remain proposal-based, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Depart from Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse and travel toward the first southern birding area. Arrival timing determines whether an initial wetland or open-country stop is practical.
Explore Djerba’s mudflats, saltworks and wetland margins for ducks, flamingos, swamphen, gulls, shorebirds and migrants. The sequence of sites responds to current water and bird conditions.
Enter the southern desert and oasis zone for Greater Hoopoe-Lark, Bar-tailed Lark, Desert Wheatear, sandgrouse and desert warblers. Field timing is adjusted to heat, wind and activity.
Combine steppe with agricultural and olive-grove habitat. These landscapes add possibilities for Barbary Partridge, shrikes, larks, raptors and several wheatears.
Use local knowledge and appropriate timing for Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, Cream-colored Courser, Maghreb Wheatear and other dry-country targets. No particular encounter is guaranteed.
Change habitats in the cork oak forest of northwestern Tunisia. Levaillant’s Woodpecker, African Blue Tit, forest passerines and seasonal woodland movement become the focus.
Make a last targeted field stop before returning to the same agreed town used at departure: Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse.
