Tunisia Sunny Winter Desert and Djerba Birding Tour
Cross southern Tunisia over six winter days, beginning with Djerba’s tidal birdlife before moving through sandy desert, rocky country and oases.
About this tour
This six-day winter journey begins with the agreed road transfer from Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse to Djerba, where the first night is spent. A full second day is reserved for the island’s saltworks, wetlands, mudflats and broad intertidal areas, using local conditions to locate wintering waterbirds and shorebirds.
The remaining field days turn inland through southern Tunisia. Agricultural land and olive groves lead into sandy desert, rocky terrain and oases, creating changing opportunities for larks, wheatears, sandgrouse, raptors and North African specialties. Representative possibilities range from Ferruginous Duck and White-headed Duck to Greater Hoopoe-Lark, African Desert Warbler, White-crowned Wheatear and Desert Sparrow.
The route is planned for a private group of two to eight and can be adjusted for light, weather, recent sightings and photography. Guests need binoculars; spotting scopes are available locally, which avoids potential customs complications with this equipment. Every species remains dependent on natural movement, and the final transport, accommodation, meals, access and price are confirmed in the proposal.

Leave the agreed pickup point in Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse and travel south to Djerba. The first overnight is on the island, positioning the group for a complete wetland and intertidal session the following day.
Spend the day between mudflats, saltworks, wetlands and tidal shore. Timing and observation points respond to water levels, light and current bird activity, with emphasis on wintering shorebirds, ducks, gulls, herons and photography.
Move into southern agricultural land, olive groves and increasingly arid habitat. Search roadside and open-country sites for Barbary Partridge, larks, shrikes, wheatears and raptors while continuing toward the desert sector.
Work the desert edge and oasis environment around Ksar Ghilane. Greater Hoopoe-Lark, Bar-tailed Lark, Desert Wheatear, African Desert Warbler, sandgrouse and desert finches are among the possibilities.
Continue through sandy country and oasis habitat, allowing a further chance to find specialties missed earlier. Stops and pace remain flexible around bird behaviour, weather and photographic conditions.
Use the last field period in rocky desert and oasis country near Ghomrassen and Matmata. Concentrate on remaining supported targets before the agreed departure arrangement.
